Although, not all plumbing emergencies can be avoided, keeping your plumbing healthy can go a long way to avoid costly repairs.
Beware Of What You Put Down The Drain
1. Grease or cooking oil:
When grease and cooking oil is poured down the drain it will often solidify in your home's plumbing before it can make it to the main sewer lines, over time this can lead to nasty clogs that could cost you. To avoid this try allowing the remaining grease or oil to solidify in an old jar or a bowl before adding it to your trash, although this does not eliminate all grease and oil going down your drain it can greatly reduce it. It is also a good idea to run hot water down your kitchen sink for a few moments after you are finished washing your dishes to allow any grease or oil from your dishes a better chance to make it to the sewer lines before solidifying in your home's pipes.
2. Avoid chemical drain cleaners:
Drain cleaners are generally advertised as a quick and easy way to beat a clog in your pipes, and get your drains flowing again. But Beware… they often contain harsh chemicals that can compromise the integrity of your pipes, eating away at the inner lining. This can leave you with weak points that could cause the pipes to burst later on. Instead use a plunger or a drain snake, or call a plumber for help. If You're get plumbing backs up on a regular basis there could be a bigger problem and it is always a good idea to consult a plumber to avoid an even bigger more costly problem down the line.
3. Don't Flush Trash:
Toilets and plumbing pipes are designed to handle toilet paper and human bodily waste. Flushing anything else, even products that claim to be flushable, can wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing. Even flushing items similar to toilet paper, such as facial tissue and paper towels, can cause a major issue because these products don’t break down as easily as toilet paper does when in contact with water. So make sure to put trash in the trash.
4. Is my soap bad for my house?
Possibly, Body wash is “healthier” for your home’s plumbing than bar soap. Bar soap produces a lot of soap scum that coats the walls of your home’s drainage pipes, which can eventually result in clogs. Body wash remains liquid and travels much more easily through your home’s plumbing.
